Infinity pools

Where should the water disappear?

An infinity edge lets water spill into a collection area below the visible pool edge. We check the site levels and structure before confirming the design. The collection area and equipment also need room for maintenance.

The outlook

Choose the sightline from the terrace or the room where you see the pool most.

The structure

Ground levels on both sides of the spill edge help determine the structure beneath it.

The return system

Water collection and circulation planned alongside the visible edge.

Design around the outlook

The view helps decide the pool position

A boundary wall that’s obvious when you’re standing can disappear behind the waterline when you sit down. After 24+ years building pools in Dubai we still pull up a chair on the terrace before agreeing the height of an infinity edge.

A useful first photo is the view from the chair or window where you hope to see the water disappear. We then need to see the other side of that edge. There has to be room below it to collect the water and reach the equipment. A view alone cannot tell us whether an infinity edge will work on your plot.

Below the sightline

What the infinity edge needs below it

The upper edge makes the view. Below it a second area catches the spill and sends water back to the pool. The proposal should show where both will fit.

  • Your usual seat

Sight along the proposed waterline from the terrace chair and check what appears behind it.

  • The drop beyond

Measure the ground on the far side of the wall before choosing which length of edge will spill.

  • The lower basin

Draw the catch basin below the lip with standing room beside it for inspection.

  • Planting in the view

Allow for mature hedge height so foliage does not hide the edge a few seasons later.

The garden around the water

Leave room for the garden you want to keep

Check what will sit in front of the view in a few years. A hedge that is low today may eventually hide the edge from the terrace. A tree you want to keep might be a better frame for the pool than a new row of planting. We look at the height of both the water and the planting.

A disappearing edge still needs a way in for the person who will look after it. Before choosing paving or planting below the edge we mark out where someone can stand to inspect the catch basin. Lighting can go on the same plan. Once the pumps are running we show you the route the water takes and which parts of the collection area need to stay clear.

Checking the drop

Review the site before choosing the edge

An infinity pool cannot be priced reliably from a style photograph alone. The location of the edge and the construction conditions affect the scope. We also need to understand the available room for the collection system.

Send us a plan or photographs that show the garden and the outlook you want to frame. We can discuss the idea before arranging a closer assessment. The design and estimate are then developed around what the property can accommodate.

01

Levels

A level change beyond the far wall can affect whether the disappearing edge works from your seat.

02

Viewpoints

Consider the outlook from both the pool and the house.

03

Maintenance access

The collection area and equipment should be practical to reach.

Edge questions

Will this edge
work here?

Photograph the view from your favourite seat. We can look at the sightline with you.

Does every property suit an infinity pool?

No single design suits every site. We assess the levels and structure as well as the outlook. There must also be enough space for the water collection system.

Can the rest of the pool be customised?

Yes. The shape and entry can be planned with your chosen finish and lighting. These details must suit the site and the vanishing-edge design.

Does an infinity pool have to overlook the sea?

No. A line of trees or an open stretch of garden can work just as well. What matters is what you see beyond the water from the place where you usually sit and whether the ground allows a catch basin below the edge.

Can an existing pool be converted to an infinity design?

That needs a site assessment. The existing structure and surrounding levels may limit what can be changed. We explain whether a conversion is practical and what additional work would be required before preparing a proposal.
